Just to add to Fed-up's reply - you may have either bad hardware (2k is much more
sensitive to this on install than 98 - if your 98 installation often froze, rebooted,
give registry errors etc, this would also point to bad hardware) or hardware not
compatible with 2k. An install of 2k should take 30-45 minutes on a reasonable machine.
Assuming you can (or have) - I would now back up your important data and do a clean
install (boot from 2k install CD & use its partitioning tools to remove existing
partition and create a new one for 2k. If its an upgrade CD, you'll need you 98 install
CD too - just to prove eligibility for upgrade). If this install also hangs, its
a process of elimination to find which hardware is causing the problem (RAM is good
start point - eg, if > 1 stick, run with each on its own - if big enough - at least
64MB, preferably 128. Or use a known good stick from elsewhere).
