Windows 2000 not pinging

Hi. I have a Win2000 PC connected to a hub. Also on the hub is a NTL cable broadband connection and another PC running Win 98. The Win 98 PC can ping the NTL box but the Win 2000 PC can not. The Win 2000 PC can not ping the Win 98 box and the Win 98 box can not ping the Win 2000 box. This sounds as though it could be a firewall issue, but there does not appear to be one installed on either PC. Any ideas as to where I should start looking? Is this a compatability issue with Win200 and Win98 and, if so, why can't I ping the NTL box from PC if I can from another? A poser, has had me scratching my head for a while now.
