Another Win2K printer installation problem

Following a non-related fatal Win2k disaster which involved a re-install from the
CD and then SP4 installation, I've been driven half-mad by trying to reinstall my
Lexmark X1150 printer. Anti-virus and personal firewall were disabled; the registry
cleaned, healed, everything. Nothing would persuade Win2k that the Lexmark was a
friend. Eventually, in despair, I looked for every reference of Lexmark in the registry
and carefully deleted them, and started again. "Hurray" as we say over here - all
came to life and the printer was installed. But now I am plagued by incessant pop-up
"Found New Hardware" windows, promising yet another printer reinstall. Cancelling
the process only results in yet another window a few seconds later. They won't leave
me alone. The only way to stop them is to unplug the USB cable, but that's not exactly
a solution is it? Any ideas on how to get rid of them for good? Thank you.
