Mobos have two IDE cable connectors. IDE-0 & 1, each has a MASTER and SLAVE.
There should be a decal on the HD and CDROM to make it MASTER, SLAVE or CABLE SELECT.
Mobos can be very pickey. The particular cable you have may make you use CABLE SELECT.
Try everything.
