IE6 toolbar trouble

Hi,

I found quite a bunch of viruses and trojans on my system recently and managed to
clear them from the pc using AVG 7, Spybot and Adaware, but I'm still having problems
with IE6.

Every time I open IE from a shortcut on the desktop or the programs folder, it opens
up with no file menu or toolbar buttons (forward, back, etc.). It just shows a blank
grey bar above the address box and Google toolbar. I tried uninstalling Google toolbar
but that made no difference. Also the toolbar seems to be completely locked - there
is no lock/unlock option in the View/Toolbars any more.

But when I open up a page in Firefox, right-click and select "view this page in IE",
IE opens up OK with all my usual buttons and file menu, except it still doesn't have
the toolbar lock/unlock, and I can't drag anything on it.I used to have my links
as buttons on the file menu bar at the top, but now they're locked in a drop-down
menu at the side and can't be moved. Apart from that, IE seems to browse fine and
doesn't crash.

Any tips on how to fix this? After finding the viruses and trojans and deleting them,
I cleared my browser cache, including offline material, history and temp files, and
did further scans after updating all security progs, but this IE thing is still bugging
me. Irritatingly, I can't simply do a re-instal as, when I download IE6 and double-click
on the exe for installation, it just opens up the browser already installed! I've
also done an IE repair and restart from a Run command line, as it doesn't show up
on the add/remove programs display, but that didn't do anything.

I'd like to be able to fix this without having to remove service packs (I've got
SP4 installed) or reinstalling Windows itself. I don't seem to be able to uninstal
IE6 at all. Is there some way to instal IE5.5 over it (I was happier with that one),
or does Microsoft have me over a barrel?

Any help much appreciated, thanks.

John.
