I get that too at times and I use Firefox, BTW.

I call them "fake connects". I sign on to my ISP, my ID and PW are confirmed and then nothing happens.

Sometimes I see activity going out and nothing comes back. This is apparently not on my end. Your ISP probably does not own a network of local servers in your town and one server is having a problem communicating with another until some operator somewhere notices and corrects the condition.

I use dialup thru a modem. I also get a similar condition sometimes when I do a lot of activity of starting and stopping the email client, opening and closing multiple websites. Some signal to the modem interrupting some incomplete operation jams it. It won't transmit. Disconnecting and signing on again doesn't do anything. I have to reboot.
