I have just installed Windows 2000 SP4. After installation I proceeded to the Windows
Update site. I found updates would be downloaded to my computer but were not installed.
The Windows Update site simply provided the message "Updates were unable to be successfully
installed".

After some effort, I discovered that "Client for Microsoft Networks" had to be installed
along with the usual "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in order for the downloaded updates
to be automatically installed! Microsoft declined to explain why this is so. If
I recall correctly, "Client for Microsoft Networks" was only required for some updates,
but am unsure.

I try to run a tight ship and don't install any software unless required so didn't
initially install "Client for Microsoft Networks". My firewall tho is set to block
netbios ports 137 thru 139 so messages broadcast by "Client for Microsoft Networks"
do not leave my computer.

Perhaps this finding my also apply to Windows XP as well.
