It sounds like you attempted to install XP from inside of 2000.  It can be done that 
way but you have read the prompts and choose upgrade, not separate install.  http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html 
should get you started.  Since you have your data backed up, you are set to go.
