Just have to make sure we are on the same page. A "caddy" was usually referred to
as the "tray" that is used in removable HDD units. That is, the two piece units
where you have a stationary mounted unit in a computer or multiple HDD case, and
a removable tray that inserts into what we would call a "HDD bay".
So basically, my first post is correct then.
Doesn't matter where you buy them as many of them can have cheap chipsets with problems,
and they are used by many of the major manufactures who build complete external USB
drive units. IOMEGA and Lacie brands for instance have had issues, as well as the
CompUSA bare enclosures have had issues that I have personally dealt with.
I've purchase drives and enclosures seperately and assemble them myself as you have
apparently done, and seems to be the best option for service on a failed unit. A
Seagate drive with a 5 year warranty and an Acomdata enclosure have been the best
combo IME. Not one failure yet in 4 plus years on my own units and those I have
put together for friends/family and customers..
Don't know anything about the Gemini as it isn't sold through anyone I do business
with..
Good luck in trying to retreive your data. Many have posted here with the same issue
and haven't been so lucky.
