Sometimes, when they have their thinking caps on, or if they are feeling a financial
pinch, my relatives ask me to assemble a custom PC for them. I think, no matter
how I describe my DIY results, a few are less impressed than if it had a real brand
name.
When the HD 2400 Pro was still very new, I used it as the compromise part, when for
myself I would have preferred the X1650 Pro for only a couple of dollars more. That
nephew wanted "all the newest" at "the cheapest cost", using the same OS he's been
using (W2K), and never has been one to listen to advice. He's had no complaints
I've heard of since he got what he specified.
Now I have assembled a newer PC for his sister to use, although she does listen,
whether she absorbs much of it or not. It has an HD 3650 right now, and she doesn't
care what OS I put on it (so it will probably get XP), but I want to use an HD 3850
with Win2K in the dual boot on one of my own (no Win98se any more for the very latest
hardware).
ATI stopped offering drivers for the last two VGA generations that would install
to Windows2000. The small program that is supposed to convert a regular driver is
being balky, and I will look at what Driver Guide has, of course, although I would've
sworn, right up to arriving there, that the Rage 3D site was where I'd found a preconverted
7.x driver for my nephew's VGA.
