You mentioned "large batches". I think you mean a manual process. When I have a problem like this I use a batch file to rename things the way I want. The sort order in Win 2000 is not the same as XP. Still, there are ways to rename the files to force the order your want. There are some third party programs to help arrange albums of photos and/or alter the sort order. Also, which program do you use to get your photos? I use one one from Cannon lets me change the prefix and put files in folders by date and sort by the frame number.Like this:
my_cat_001.jpg
my_cat_002.jpg
...
my_cat_009.jpg
my_cat_010.jpg
...on so on
