Yes, there was a lot I did in basic and DOS back then, but it went by the wayside
long ago. I played around with CPM and I had an Atari 800 (man those disk drives
were expensive) which I did many programs on. It was head over heals better in graphics
and sound than the IBM systems and easier to write programs for. (example of something
along the lines of what you wanted: http://www.atarimagazines.com/v4n7/morsecode.html
) My brother still uses it for testing various things and writes his own games.
I would say there should be something for IBM compatible systems too, but I never
did it on an IBM system. I only did information type programs on IBM systems. The
rub here is that you need to stay in DOS to keep it simple as you already know.
Running through the more modern operating systems requires programming that I know
you didn't want to do.

Lots of info here: http://www.k8zt.com/morse.html

You will see sites like the one above. Things and options have progressed as technology
has advanced in the hardware.
