LAN Adapters Configuration Corrupted

I have an IBM ThinkPad running Windows 2000 Professional SP4. I am a computer novice,
but am one who can generally follow instructions. I need some instruction/advice/help.
Last week I could get on the internet via Internet Explorer or via Compuserve using
a Knology cable connection. If necessary, I could access Compuserve with dialup.
As of yesterday, the cable line/Internet Explorer gives me a Cannot Find Server
despite the cable line being checked with another computer that WILL log on. The
dialup option seems now to be incapable of discovering a dial tone. I use this machine
about once a week, and can't figure out what might have happened. I have AVG antivirus
and Spybot.
Upon booting up, I get a message: PXE E05
LAN Adapters Configuration is Corrupted or not Initialized... Boot Agent Cannot
Continue.
After a pause the system does boot up as normal, and I can access letters and such.
I just can't get online.
I don't have any Windows 2000 disks. Do I need to take the machine back to the Microsoft
installer, or can I restore/fix what is 'corrupted/not intialized?' Any help or
suggestions would be appreciated.
