Should ask the ISP if they have a speed test and tweaking information. If not, check
out www.broadbandreports.com.. They have speed tests and tweaking information.
Any ISP worth their weight should have tools to check your speed and have advice
on tweaking your machine for high speed connections.
For instance, I went from 3/1.5 meg DSL, to 25/25 on Verizon FIOS. I run both W2K
and XP. Verizon has a speed test and a utility that checks your machine for proper
settings to enable the full speed of your connection. Before applying the tweaks,
I couldn't get more then 7 meg down on any machine. After the tweak utility, I could
get 24 down, 25 up. Broadband reports came up with the same speed at night, less
in the daytime.
Just one thing to check also..
Out of the box, neither operating system was designed for the speeds of the internet
connection today and need to be tweaked despite what MS says.
