le starting up windows 2000 pro get message ntoskrnl.exe missing or coruupt". tried finding the file on win2k pro cd, only found ntoskrnl ( which is a ex_ file size 743kb) while the orignal corruted file was 1.6mb. is theis the file required and how do I go about coping it to harddrive?

That's the file you need but it needs to be expanded to it's full size..(to the root 
of C: )
You can use the recovery console, if you have set it up right with the MMC ( so you 
can use the SET commands)
See the SET commands in the win2k help files
You can also expand it to a 1.72 floppy and then copy it to the C: from the 3 1/2" 
disk.
Used GRDisk to make a 1.72 floppy...
If not you can use the software below to do it..
It will take a bit of work on your part to do it...
You can also use the repair on the win2k cd to get it back.. (the one under SETUP)

The tools are neat to have around because they are hard to find...
Read and Copy items from NTFS/or fat32 format in the DOS mode + more tools,see below
if you are running w98/win2k/XP

recover files you put in the recycle bin and then empty it..

Active@ NTFS Reader + Copy for DOS v 1.0

Active@ UNERASER for DOS v 3.0

I expanded the file and added it to the system32 directory and I am still getting the error msg. I am trying to aviod re-installing win2k. Is there any other wayout?

Put the file in the root of c:
(the 1st part of C:\>)

re-installed win2k pro, after formatting the partition, but PC still hangs at logo screen. Any takers?
