Inaccessible_boot_device error

Hello,
I have a recurring problem with the blue screen error "inaccesible_boot_device".
Normally, I can resolve this by using my Windows 2000 CD and repairing the installation.
Unfortunately, I am away from home and do not have the CD. I downloaded Windows 2000
boot disks but when I get to the point where I normally run chkdsk (In the Recovery
Console) I get an error that autochk.exe cannot be found and when I try "DIR" I get
an error stating that the directory contents cannot be enumerated. Any ideas on how
I can resolve this without the CD? Thanks

sounds like the HD is bad or going bad,,,the 4 setup disk will not help...and it
sounds like the win2k cd will not help as well...
The files from the cd and the setup disks are put into a ram drive but the autochk.exe
needs to be on the HD...and if you are getting "inaccesible_boot_device". it's telling
you it can see it...or use it..(the HD)
If you are using a fat32 setup on your HD you can download a win98se boot disk (from
bootdisk.com) and check the HD but if you are use the NTFS system ,well it maybe
time to replace the HD and reinstall...
The new HD are cheap now days...

That may be true but considering that I've had recent success with the Win2k CD,
I'm not going to do anything radical until I can try that again. If it doesn't work
this time well that's that... but if it does, I would at least be able to get my
stuff off before getting a new HD.
