Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

Posted by Garry Stockton (7 messages posted)

I am having persistent problems with opening my CAD program, Mastercam ver. 7, Draft.exe.

I have been using this program for years, and have never had this problem before;
while the program is starting up, I receive a program error message. I have uninstalled
and reinstalled the program, but the problem persists. I'm including the drwtsn logfile
below.

TIA for any help; I really need to solve this problem.

Garry

Hi Gary:

Nice details.

Have you tried (the Win2K equivalent of) SCANDISK
and DEFRAG?

Yes, I have; I should have noted that along with the other details. No problems with
either; I tend to keep up with both on a twice-a-month schedule.

All available updates and patches had already been applied, both for OS and applications;
the last was a driver update for my GeForce 5200 video card. I opened and used Mastercam
Draft twice after that, without event.

BTW, I also scan regularly with ZoneAlarm-both anti-virus and spyware; Spybot S&D;
Ad-Aware personal; and Spyware Blaster. I also use CC Cleaner, and IOBit Smart Defrag.

I rarely have problems; though I'm experienced, I'm not an expert by anyone's definition.
However, I do try not to be a source of problems:-)

Thanks for the suggestion.

Garry

I've run Hijack This; no problems were indicated when I submitted it to the Hijack
This.de site for analysis.

Thanks for the suggestion.

If you cannot find any malware, you may be in for a long search.

1. Start in safe mode and try Mastercam. If a CNC device is actually attached to
that PC, you may get other errors (in safe mode), but note if the access violation
disappears.

2. If the access violation does disappear, pull your internet cable out (disable).
Run msconfig and remove (uncheck) all startup items. If, on restart, the violation
re-appears, you need to look through the processes (msconfig) for any anti-malware
applications. Remove them also.

3. If, on restart, the violation is still there, you may need to go through the Windows
Updates. Remove the most recent, a few at a time, until you find the one causing
the problem. I would wait at least a few days for a reply from the malware forum
before taking this time-consuming step.

NOTE: If the access violation does not disappear in step one, my guess would be the
memory.

Restarted in safe mode; access violation remained for Mastercam. You suggested 'memory' as a problem; what do you mean? I'm running 1.5gig of RAM; my pagefile size is set appropriately; and memory check indicates no problems. I have not reset any settings, prior to the problem occurring. Am I missing something here? I could only find one Mastercam forum.
http://www.emastercam.com/

Go ahead and register there and post your problem. As for the memory:

If a memory stick (or a bank on one of the sticks) fails, it might still pass initial
tests. XP might subsequently shut that area of memory off. This would shift all higher
memory addresses (numbers) down so they remain sequential. And Mastercam, still believing
it has 1.5gig, might be trying to use memory allocated by the system (or other apps).

Begin by making sure your BIOS does a full POST test, not "quick". You can re-set
this to "quick" after one try. Also, try memtest86. If you can boot from CD, I would
download the bootable *.iso so you can run it without windows loaded.
http://www.memtest86.com/

If the memory looks good, look at disabling Data execution prevention (DEP). See
"Number Two - D.E.P" on the following page:
http://www.updatexp.com/0xC0000005.html

If nothing above works, I would start pulling memory sticks (in addition to looking
through the Windows Updates).

Here's a free memory tester. I've used it for
years, and it works great:
