Can't install IE 6.0

Every time I try to install Internet Explorer I get as far as it telling me that it isn't a signed certificate or something and it asks do you want to accept and I tell it Yes. Then the whole thing goes away and a pane comes up telling me I need to restart my computer. This happens when I try to download from the microwhooo update site or from the IE download site. What the hockey sticks am I doing wrong?

Hi Kaintuck:

Go here:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/6.0

and download the full installer version of IE6. You'll
want to be on a high-speed Internet connection,
because it's a 76MB download. Burn it to a CD, and run
your installation from the burned CD.

Dex ole buddy, I have Firefox on my Win 2000 pro and old 98 computers. This one is for my daughter and for some reason where she lives Firefox is blocked, won't work, goes caput, whatever. The service people told her to use IE 6 on this computer running 2000 pro. She lives in the sticks farther out than we do. I still think something is fishy, but she just wants it to work.

Hi Len:

I don't know, as I've never tried it, but I would think it
would work. You may even get a screen asking if you
want to "repair" or "reinstall."

I just left the IEv5.0 that came with my Win2K, and
moved on to OPERA for my surfing.

Jerry Can I just open the download to repair IE6 or is burning it to CD, more than just to hold it ready for use? Grace

Hi Grace:

Theoretically, you should be able to just open the
Microsoft link for repairs.

I suggested downloading the "full" version and
keeping it on a CD because then you've got all the
components at hand.

The download link needs an open Internet
connection all during the installation/repair. It
looks at your current IE installation, then goes
out and gets the individual components you need
from one of Microsoft's servers. It may need to
make several calls for several different
components. If any one of the individual
downloads fails or downloads only partially, you
end up with another corrupted installation.

When all your installer files are on one CD, you
eliminate the Internet variable completely.

Thanks Jerry. sorry to be so stupid, but how is the downloaded file opened? A simple double click opening reveals a "IE6 full" folder having rows of Zip files and two looking like set ups. IE6 Setup 497k and IEK6 2647k, both in Properties described as Win 32 cabinet self extractors. Have you any idea which, if any, would launch IE60. If you have time, please guide me. Grace

Hi Grace:

Use the file "IE6SETUP.EXE".
If you don't have "show file extensions" turned on
it may just appear as "IE6SETUP".

Double-click on IE6SETUP, and that will start the
installer, which will examine your system and
install what it needs from the files archived in
those "CAB" files. ("CAB" files are compressed
files like "ZIP" files. You won't have to deal
with them yourself -- the installer will take care
of them.)

Hi Grace:

Take a look at this page:
http://www.compu-docs.com/ieadmininstall.htm

I couldn't get the "download the full" section to work,
but there's a note near the bottom dealing with the
"You have a newer version . . . " message, with a
work-around. You might give it a try.
