Strange IE6 issues in win2k

I've been running win2k for a couple years on this install and this PC with no issues
whatsoever until recently... whenever I open IE6 now, the browser window pops up
but the contents of the window remain blank, the page load progress bar at the bottom
freezes after just a split second, and so does the animated windows logo at the top
right... it does nothing further until I right-click on the bottom tab for the browser
window in the taskbar... as soon as I right-click the tab in the taskbar for it,
then the animated icon starts moving again and the page will continue to load, allthough
rather slowly... and after its fully loaded then I can surf within that one window
normally, but it loads everything MUCH slower than it used to.. I'm on verizon high-speed
DSL and its loading like I'm on dialup whereas it used to be very fast. The machine
is a pentium 4 2.66GHz running on an ECS MB with 1GB RAM and an 80GB Seagate Barracuda
HD which I built myself and like I said have had ZERO problems with for a couple
years now... until just recently. I also noticed that no matter what application
I use now, if it requires an internet connection then it acts like the connection
is very slow... I've had updated virus protection the entire time I've used my comp,
and I run routine spyware/adware scans. I've also tried norton windoctor and eusing
registry checker/repair utilities to no success.. I'm getting to the point where
I'm tempted to just wipe the whole disk and reformat/reload... but I REALLY don't
want to if I can at all have a hope of repairing things first.. Please please please
someone out there help me! Thank you in advance!

Re-set your modem and then try installing a different browser to narrow down the
problem.

I reset my modem and installed Mozilla FireFox. Firefox works great, fast, and no
problems at all that I can tell so far. IE6, however, is still broken. Also, now
that firefox is installed and I set it as my default browser, then when I try to
open IE, the little window pops up saying "Internet Explorer is not your default
browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?" And I try to click NO but
I can't click on anything... it just displays the hourglass cursor and freezes up
until I do a ctrl+alt+del and close it from the task manager. So now I can't even
open IE at all. I would still like to fix IE, but once its working I'm thinking I'll
mostly be using firefox as it seems to be much faster and less problematic. Thank
you for the suggestion by the way. :)

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites
Don't make FireFox your default browser,,,IE hooks up to many items in windows,,,OutLook
for just one of them...
Use the Tools/Option/Gen'l. item to undo the default browser item..windows is setup
to see IE running as the browser let it do it's thing....then you will be a happy
window user.
It's said MS has had hard time to get it right but it's still trying..with tons of
updates.. :>(

Boot to safe mode, open ie and then ie help. Go to the index and type "repair" for
instructions. This is basically a re-install so if you do not have the install *.exe
(ie 6), go ahead and download it before you start.

You may also want to copy AND export (2 backups) your favorites first.
