Fix Or Repair Daily.
That used to be a joke about a Car. Now it is passing on to the Desktop. No a day goes by I don't get and update for my OS, for my anti-virus, for my Flash for my Firefox. Even Apple sends by updates, and I am using a PC with Windows 2000!. I thought I have a 'mature' OS and all this would be behind me!
Now this interferes with my ability to use the computer for random work. If I want to look up something, I have to wait for an update to finish and maybe a reboot. Why won't the updates wait until 3AM?
But my question is: When will this stop? When will I have a computer that will be ready when I am. Is there Viagra for computers?

Aahh.. The Old FORD acronym, Fix Or Repair Daily or my favorite, Found On Road Dead..
Except for my old FORD work truck which won't die.. LOL

It will end when we no longer have/need computers until then it's only going to get
worse. The way we are burning through the planets resources, (we are actually running
short on silicon along with just about everything else, and slilicon can't be recycled
back into chips like many think) we will see a bigger crunch in ten years than we
have now and it will only get worse. In 100 years or so, we should be back to the
1700's if we don't get wise soon. Oil for instance, if you want to know the deeper
truth about where we are going, Google "peak oil effect on economies" and start reading..
It's no joke. I worked for two of the big oil companies in the 70's. We all knew
what was coming but some buried their heads in the sand, thinking they would be gone
by then and it wouldn't matter.. :-(

We have a few legislators in the government trying educate the rest of them, but
it is falling on dead ears and make no mistake, the USA government know all about
it. They just aren't telling the public so as not to start a panic. It will sink
in sooner or later when our economy totally crashes and no one can get or afford
gas to fill their cars! I'm glad I have made some preperations....

Computers will be the least of our worries at that point! ;-)

Hello, CK;
Peak Oil ? Peak Silicon? That is a rather bleak picture you paint and I have to agree that it does indeed look like it is getting worse.
Your reference to "peak oil" was right on. The exact time is not know, but the theory has been previously demonstrated on a smaller scale. This bell shape peak theory, or idea, can be applied to the computer hardware and software industry as well. While there is not yet a shortage of raw silicon, there is a real problem with all the other things needed to produce high performance low cost computer chips. Our PCs and the OS are the work of years of reteach and production. Sad to say, much of the chips and software are "throw away" items. Such can not be readily recycled. It was easier to Fix Or Repaid Daily an automobile that is it now to mountain a PC. I can not go to the junk yard and find a memory stick that fits my PC! And I can not use old DLL files from w90SE to repair my Win 2000 system!
I was in Hard Disk R and D at the old Dysan in Sunnyvale back in the early 80's. Today a lot of production as well as research is being done in third world countries. That may not be such a good idea. There will come a point where those countries may no longer be willing to share their skilled labor with others. If that happens, we may someday have a "technology shortage" that rivals the peak oil problem. And people will wonder how did it happoen!
But by then, there will not be daily updates to Windows 200 -Right?

There probably won't be daily anything, except pain and misery. Don't forget global
warming. History Channel has had some good videos' on that one.. We are just wreaking
our planet for future generations. Back to the future!!!!!! But by then, we will
all have computers implanted in us won't we?? LOL Ironic how we think technology
will get us out of everything when nature is bigger than all of us put together!

Have you seen the documentary on crude oil that the ABC (australian broadcasting
company) has done?? Also an americianized version on the history channel of that
one.. If that doesn't wake us up, I don't think anything will. The only Windows
we will be using way in the future is the one that looks back on our history and
our stupidity.. :-(

It will stop when you turn off the auto update options that most apps have.

If the image does not load, go to the reference above. Note: How does this relate to Windows 2000? Because Windows 2000 is just one of many technology products that should have been recycled and used over again. A lot of human and other resources were wasted on making OS like VISTA that was more for entertainment rather than for productivity. The wanton waste of Technology runs along with out waste of other resources. The Peak Oil Theory can also apply to our rapid apparent technological advancement. We may all have to go back to Windows 95!

I said it wrong. Let me clarify.
Both our human resources and our nature resources are not being managed well. Otherwise the earth could support about 100 to 250 billion people without undue hardships. (Toilet paper would be banned.)

The cause is cupidity. (Not a misspell, pun intended.)

I just take each application as they come. A example that comes to mind is Firefox, and Java. I can't think of to many other Apps on My PC that will update automatiicaly unless I uncheck the option.

A few times a year I will might take a look at what version is current, then reinstall to the latest Version, but I don't worry about each incremental update. And Windows itself is about 150 updates behind, I never worry about installing them.

Applications are their own animals. I mean that literally.. Windows can't and won't
ever control their update formulas or options. You would have to take that up with
the program vendors when there are no options to turn off their updates. Since
W2K is at the end of it's life cycle as far as MS cares, we are on our own.. You
can disable updates for Windows, but that has no control over individual apps..
:-(

You are right. I should use a Puppy or a Ubuntu CD to browse the Internet. Hey, the spell checker does not like Ubuntu. Why is this?
