File associations not being saved

I have some file associations that stopped working, such as .html, .htm, .swf etc.
I have reset them in the folder options / file types but they are not being saved.
When I click on those files, it just warns me there is no program associated with
that file type. Nothing I do will result in them being remembered and I have to
constantly use the "open with" option which is annoying. Does not seem to have affected
all associations however.
Any ideas welcome !

Don't know if this has been asked.
Did you add on any new programs right before you had this problem?
I have switched to Firefox but I can't Outlook Express to work. I tried "Get Mail"
but it didn't work either. Anyone know of a program that I can d/load that will work?
Or, how to make O.E. work in Firefox.

Can you go back to a restore point?

Here is the chain of events that led up to this. I don't know that they are related
however.
Thunderbird email did an automatic update that had a bug ( in the updater not the
actual update ) that caused the right click "sendto mail" link to stop working. Several
patches were tried to fix that with no luck so far.
One suggestion was to manually download the new version and install that which I
did. It did not fix the right click problem ( discussed in another thread here ).
In the normal course of things while working I later tried to click on a file to
open an application and it did not work. I have discovered several associations
that quit working, though most seem ok. ( I have not tested all ).
In any event, trying to recreate the associations does not work....they are lost
once I close the dialog box to set them in the Folder Options menu.

Do you have a Win2000 disk? You can do a repair and not lose any data.

My response is probably more applicable to this thread. Check for malware infections...

Two infections have been removed. Still can't save some file extensions. One in
particular is an issue .msi because it won't allow me to install anything delivered
as an .msi package.

I did a recovery from Win2K install disk.
I reset the .html and .htm file extensions to default and when I click the they open
in IE. When I go back to edit those in the Folder Settings /File associations window
and change them to open with Firefox they won't open. I still get the error that
there is no program associated with that file type.
There is...it is lying to me! The icon for that file type is even changed to the
Firefox icon so how would the icon change if Windows was not locating the Firefox
directory when I changed associations? When I look again in the setup for that file
type it shows that Firefox.exe is set.
What gives?

Can't you just Right-Click, select "Open With", select Firefox.exe and tick the checkbox
that says "Always use this program to open these files" (Note: I seem to remember
sometimes you have to use shift+right-click to be able to select Open With)
Or just set Firefox to be your default browser?
Changing the Folder View associations is not recommended...
