Sorted it :)

Did this:

Open Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Active Directory Sites And Services
Go to Sites->Default-First-Site-Name->Servers

We had 2 servers listed here - SRVPDC01 (our live server) and SRVPDC02 (another machine 
used to resore the backup files to the live one and then removed from the network) 
- the problen for us was that it was trying to connect to SRVPDC02 which was no longer 
on the network - once SRVPDC02 had been deleted all seemed to work perfectly!
