I've just seen something similar.
A file named "ReImportThomsonPriceHistory.pl" shows as "5/5/2009 10:05AM" in the
Name column when the column is wide enough to show the full correct name. If the
column is made narrower, it shows a truncated version of the correct name followed
by "..." as usual.
Right clicking and choosing Properties shows the correct name.
Hitting F2 to rename, clearing the automatic highlight and re-highlighting the name
shows the correct name.
Very odd!
There are no strange characters hidden in the file name.
I can create a new file in a different folder and the same thing happens.
While typing the new name, it displays correctly until I type the final 'l'. It then
changes to the date/time shown above. If I type another character it switches back
to showing the correct name.
Capitalisation seems to matter - changing the initial upper case letter to lower
case stops this happening.
Again this is on Win Server 2003.
Creating a file with the same name on XP does not show this behaviour.
All disks have NTFS file systems.
