Authenticate through DC with Child user account

Let's say I have a share on a domain controller and I want to access it with a user account from a child domain that is nested directly under the original DC. For example, I want john@mustang.ford.com to authenticate against a share on ford.com. How can I go about doing this? I tried using john@mustang.ford.com as the user but the DC won't accept it.

Can you create a universal group on the root DC and add the user to it? Then give the group access to the share?
