keeps shutting down when being scanned

Hello,
I am using server 2003 just to manage a few computers. The other week something was
deleted that shouldn't have been and when I try to use any kind of data recovery
software that scans your system for recoverable data, the server automatically shutsdown.
It seems like there is some kind of security breach that the system has in place
but I do not know where to change it. It is like when a certain file (or registry
entry) is trying to be scanned it will shutdown. Can anyone help me?

If you are trying to recover a deleted file from a drive, it certainly shouldn't
be mounted or be in use.
The proper way to do this is to plug the drive into a different PC as a slave and
let the software run to recover the data. The more you use the drive the more chance
you have of overwriting the data and making it unrecoverable.
Specifically, what program are you trying to use to recover the data?

Thank you for your reply. I understand what you are saying and I usually connect
the drive to another PC but in this case I can not. I have recovered many files while
drives are in use and this particular drive is hardly ever written to so I know it
is still there. I use the undelete. There is some setting in server 03 that I know
I need to change to allow programs to access all files, registry, etc, I just do
not know where it is, LOL.
