windows protection error

hi everyone. i am trying to revive my son'd old computer for him. he had a virus
in it.. i ended up reformatting it, unfortunately it had been so long since i used
any of the software. we lost his 98 cd.. so i loaded the old 95 back in it. it seems
to have worked but when we boot it up now it says.. *While initializing device IOS:
windows protection error. you need to restart your computer.* of course rebooting
only brings us back to the very same error msg. what di i do wrong. and can it be
fixed. thanks in advance for any help.
