" An "upgrade" version will want to see
the older Win95 system in place before it lets you
upgrade."
And vice versa. That is, it sounds to me like she has an OEM disc and the Setup.exe
won't run if it detects a WIN.COM on the drive that is not the same version as on
the CD.
I've found that the minimum that is needed is to rename WIN.COM to WIN.CO and then
an OEM version of Win98 will install.
I didn't reformat my hard drive. I just installed Win98 over Win95 and saved myself
the hassle of backing up and reinstalling my files. I never had a problem because
of it.
But anyone who runs Windows should look out for MSVCRT.DLL. This iis the Visual
C run time file. It was notorious for memory leaks and Microsoft kept upgrading
it till they solved the problem. Since it was not supplied with Windows, each publisher
of a program that used it, installed a new version somewhere. If you run Find you
will probably find a half dozen copies in 4 different versions on your drive. A
program can allocate memory with one version, then move to another folder and try
to deallocate from another. The notorious instability of Win95, Win98 and Win2K
comes from that.
You can download the final version from Microsoft by searching their site for SPEU.EXE
(SPEcial Update) which includes the 285kb version of
MSVCRT.DLL. That's the only one you should have on your computer.
Put one copy in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and erase the others. You may have to boot to DOS
to do that.
