missing file

We have 2 computers this one i'm on now and another one with windows 95. When trying
to download Windows 98 on the other computer, files for starting up Windows 95 somehow
got deleted and now nothing comes up on the screen except telling you that parts
of the files were deleted and windows could not fully start. What do we need to
do to get our computer going again?

Hi Diane.
You need to format the Win85 computer and install Win98. Do you have a Win98 CD?
You can't download Win98.

Hi Keith and Jerry. We do have a windows 98 cd and have tried downloading it on the
other computer. It tells us there is an existing program and cannot download unless
we delete that program and like I said before, it won't even let us into win95, because
it says there is a file missing. Is there a way to completely delete win95 so we
can download win98, we would really like to have 95 on that computer, but right now
we are willing to try anything just to get it up and running again. Thanks for your
help!

Hi Diane:
As Keith said, you need to FORMAT the old Win95
computer and start over fresh.
I think you confused us all when you used the term
"download." Windows must be "installed" from
"media" (floppies, CDs). "Downloading" usually
implies getting files from the Internet. Windows
has never been distributed (legally) over the
Internet, although I'm sure some unscrupulous
people have illegally distributed it this way.
We're always cautious about providing information
on how to "download Windows" (illegally) from the
Internet.
Since you already have your own installation
media, I can recommend some good sites describing
the reformatting process, and tips on how to
install a new Operating System. Your installation
media will need to be a "full install", and not an
"upgrade". An "upgrade" version will want to see
the older Win95 system in place before it lets you
upgrade.

my computer advises file ADVAP132.dll is missing and suggests 'Get current HwProfile
W.'
Being unaware of either of the above would appreciate your advice on action to be
taken.
Thankyou
Charles

Hi Charles:
The original copy of the ADVAPI32.DLL (and note
correct file name) lives in the WIN95_11.CAB file
in the WIN95 folder on your Windows 95
installation CD.
When it's installed properly, ADVAPI32.DLL lives
in your
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
folder.
I see the file also listed as available for
download from:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?advapi32
but I don't know if all versions of the required
file with this name were exactly the same in all
version of Windows.
Does your computer boot to the desktop after you
see the error message?

" An "upgrade" version will want to see
the older Win95 system in place before it lets you
upgrade."
And vice versa. That is, it sounds to me like she has an OEM disc and the Setup.exe
won't run if it detects a WIN.COM on the drive that is not the same version as on
the CD.
I've found that the minimum that is needed is to rename WIN.COM to WIN.CO and then
an OEM version of Win98 will install.
I didn't reformat my hard drive. I just installed Win98 over Win95 and saved myself
the hassle of backing up and reinstalling my files. I never had a problem because
of it.
But anyone who runs Windows should look out for MSVCRT.DLL. This iis the Visual
C run time file. It was notorious for memory leaks and Microsoft kept upgrading
it till they solved the problem. Since it was not supplied with Windows, each publisher
of a program that used it, installed a new version somewhere. If you run Find you
will probably find a half dozen copies in 4 different versions on your drive. A
program can allocate memory with one version, then move to another folder and try
to deallocate from another. The notorious instability of Win95, Win98 and Win2K
comes from that.
You can download the final version from Microsoft by searching their site for SPEU.EXE
(SPEcial Update) which includes the 285kb version of
MSVCRT.DLL. That's the only one you should have on your computer.
Put one copy in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and erase the others. You may have to boot to DOS
to do that.

Thank you. I'll look into that.
My experience was that Firefox crashed every day until I searched M$ft and that led
me to what MSVCRT.DLL was and that the new version was in SPEU.EXE and I downloaded
from them. Then Fx didn't crash anymore.
BTW, I have a 2003 copy of Win2K. But it installs 4 copies of MSVCRT.DLL in 2 obsolete
versions. Someone who had the job of setting up the Win2K discs did not get a memo.
And in other news, this site has stuff for Win95:
