Thanks for the tip, Ted (I am using Windows 98 not Second Edition; if you are going to use a wet noodle on me, 'penne' is my favourite kind of pasta). I turned off my screen saver and that seemed to do the trick. So thank you very much. However, when I tried to shut down any of the other programs running as you suggested (such as Norton antivirus and automatic Update - there are about 10 things running and I'm not sure what all of them are) in each case my computer automatically turns off, I have to reboot and start over (so I end up getting nowhere). Now I am trying to run disk defragmenter and I find it is starting over all the time (after about 2 or 3 percent checked). Seems to be the same type of problem. Hank.
