Simon: two ways to extract files without use of a normal start;
Method 1. Use System File Checker.
boot to Safe Mode using the Ctrl or F8 key during bootup.
insert your Win98 CD in your drive.
click Start, Run, type: sfc
and press Enter key.
when System File Checker opens, select 'Extract One File from installation disk'.
now enter setupx.dll in the search box and press Enter.
when the 'Extract File' window opens, the 'Restore From' box should be set to your
CD-ROM drive letter as X:\Win98.
the 'Save file in:' box should read 'C:\Windows\System.
now select 'OK' and follow the prompts.
repeat for svexe2.dll and vswk4.dll
Restart and see if windows loads normally.
Method 2. Use DOS Extract Utility.
you'll need:
a Windows 98 startup diskette; if you don't have one you can download one at the
link below after your text.
and
your Windows 98 CD.
boot your computer with the windows 98 startup diskette, choose CD-ROM support (option
1),
insert the Windows 98 CD,
press Enter key and make careful note of what letter the CD-ROM drive is (e.g. drive
e: = driver mscd001 unit 0 means the cd-rom drive is e:).
when you're dropped at the a:\ prompt type in:
extract /y /a /l c:\windows\system x:\win98\base4.cab setupx.dll
where x is the letter of the CD-ROM drive and the l is the letter, not the numeral.
pay special attention to spaces and the orientation of slashes, then hit Enter key.
you'll see extract run through the cabinet files on the cd looking for the file,
and might even catch it extracting the file before it keeps going down the chain.
once you're dropped back at the a:\ prompt (hopefully it won't tell you "no matching
files"),
repeat for svexe2.dll and vswk4.dll
eject the diskette and ctrl+alt+del to restart.
see if windows loads properly.
let us know what worked for you...
