the sims is installed since about 2 years on my win98se, meanwhile all expansion
packs have been added one by one, so far, so good.
now, after upgrading nvidia geforce 7700 deluxe to the newest version of nvidia driver
(61.76), starting the game gives me a blue screen of death with an error in 0028:....
vxd vdd (09)
hitting a key gives me another blue, hitting again brings me to desktop and i restart
windows properly.
now, after starting windows98, black screen with message: windows protection error.
you need to restart your computer.
the only way to get back is to extract the most recent .cab-file stored in windows\sysbckup
containing a system.dat, system.ini, win.ini and a user.dat and put them over the
existent...so, a restore of the system just before installing sims.
i just got about this same procedure again (as my wife wants to play the game) and
again, after some tries that obviously didn't change anything i was in the blue screen
of death again - ok, this time, just to see, i did not go back to windows desktop,
but still in the blue screen pusched the power button for some seconds and this cuts
off everything; this way i could reboot again WITHOUT getting the windows protection
error...
all this just to tell you the symptoms, but now to get the problem solved i worked
on, i checked directx9.0c but so many people gaming reported about problems they
did not have before and anyway, my 'old' geforce doesn't really need this! so, the
only thing i did was to uninstall the nvidia driver, restarting and setting the standard
pci graphic adapter vga and now installed the driver on cd coming with the geforce,
this time NOT a nvidia, but some asus-driver, as this geforce came from asus and
what do you think?
my wife is now playing sims again...

n.b.: checking forums for 'windows protection error' gives me the strange feeling,
as if these errors came up with win98 in 1999, 2000, early 2001, but after that time,
nobody seems to have had problems any more in 2002, 2003 but in july, august 2004
there are many new postings again...bizarre...
