Dan (and all you other folks): With ALL your help I finally found the sound device with a bad driver (I forget the name). I Ran the "update driver" option in the system properties window. It found the correct driver in the Win98 files, installed it, and showed all was well again. The computer now goes online fine. All sounds are now on. I learned a few more things about this laptop. Once again, thanks! Gene.............
