usb port problems

i would like to know why anything i connect to my USB Port, freezes and shuts down
my computer...in the middle of printing......downloading music to my mp3 player............anything
that's connected to my USB port freezes my computer..
Could it be a virus?
too much memory in my computer?
is my computer just not made for a usb port? because it used to work just fine
