If it is using an older VIA chipset for the USB port, then electrical noise on the USB interface during very large block transfers can cause system hangs and resets. Such noise can be caused by an aging power supply, a display monitor getting old, too long or unshielded USB cables, USB hub power problems, interference from speaker wires or other electrical cables running too close to the system cables and power lines.

VIA has a driver for their older chipsets that usually solve this problem, know as USB Filter Patch. VIA USB 1.1 Filter Patch driver and select Windows ME, USB, USB 1.1 if you have an older VIA Tech USB 1.1 adapter on your system board (or card).

If you have a different vendor chip set or a USB 2.0 adapter, then noise could still be the problem, but your guess as to the cause/fix is as good a mine.
