Internal Modems the past several years have tended to be dominated by the "WinModem"
type, which technically are PCI Communications Devices, devoid of the majority of
chips that actually perform the Modulation/ demodulation chores. "WinModems" perform
the work with software. I hate the things.
If that's what you have, the usual procedure to get it back again is to physically
remove it, go into Add/Remove and uninstall the software, go into the Device Manager
and remove the device, and then restart the system.
At that point, you run their software to install the main part of the package, since
the device itself is only the access route the software uses to reach the communication
input/output path. Shut down the PC completely, and then insert the actual device
(I purposely avoid calling it a "modem", since the real thing still exists, it's
just the retailers don't make space for them).
When you restart the PC, the instructions with these devices typically tell you to
cancel the Wizard's action, if it says it found a new whatever. When the main part
of the OS is finally all loaded, the "Modem's" software left a suspense running and
it completes its install when it sees that the device is now attached.
