Modem Problems

I have Windows 98SE installed on a Compaq Armada Laptop using a Lucent Win Modem. Recently I have not been able to access the internet through dial-up. The phone dials, makes a connection to my ISP, begins to xmt/rcv data, but after 500 bytes are received, stops communicating. Web pages come up, 'page not found'. I've tried re-installing Windows without success. I've also tried re-installing the ISP interconnection software without success. I suspect a file is missing and/or the wrong version. Anyone have a clue what my problem is and how to correct? Thanks much.
