My 286 motherboard had an empty battery holder for 2 AAs on it. I asked the store
that put it together why it was empty and I was told that was when the obscure disk
battery failed. This was before the standardization on the C2032 and you couldn't
be sure that the original battery would still be manufactured a couple years later.
I don't remember if I ever replaced the battery on that and I used that computer
for 5 years. There was no power management or Plug'n'Play. So many things were
configured with DIP switches or jumpers and the clock didn't run when the computer
was off so the battery had little to do.
