I would upgrade it to 98SE, at least. Any 98SE Upgrade CD would work, but you can
use the "98-to-98SE only"
Upgrade CD as well as the more common "3.1/95 to 98SE" Upgrade CD. The "98-to-98SE"
discs are cheaper
(on eBay), but less common.
You should be able to upgrade to 98SE "in place" without
having to reinstall your programs.
Upgrading to 2000 or XP (avoid ME) would be a much bigger undertaking. You would
need to download new drivers and reinstall (or replace) some/most of your programs.
To get the best results for a 2000/XP install, you should format your hard disk and
install it from scratch.
Most 5-year-old computers can run XP (XP itself is about to turn 5), but Windows
2000 would run better on a computer of that age.
Myself, I'd stay with 98 if it's running well (or upgrade to 98SE). There are other
firewalls out there that still support 98, and you can keep using your existing Zone
Alarm install.
You don't have to stop using 98 just because 'support' has ended. Most all of the
viruses/worms nowadays are made for XP, so your main worry with 98 should be keeping
spyware off of your PC with
Spybot Search
& Destroy,
Ad-Aware, and
SpywareBlaster.
