I hate all the hype which implies that if application software is no longer supported
and upgraded it will somehow mysteriously stop working. It won't. But you do need
to keep the protection updated to counter new threats (except your firewall).
I suggest you read through few recent posts in this forum about whether or not to
stick with W98 (SE or not), about upgrading firewalls and how to protect from spyware,
trojans etc.
The summary is that if you do these following few things you should not be at risk,
and your PC will run faster than with any newer OS. The only real issue will come
when you need an upgrade for a software application that is no longer supported,
or want to install something new which doesn't run on W98.
1. Use one of the many alternative browsers eg Firefox or Opera. Cuts down the security
risks, probably below IE7 on a new OS. You COULD stick with IE but that's a riskier
course regardless of the OS.
2. Install and update regularly free anti-spyware software - AdAware, SpyBot Search
& Destroy and SpywareBlaster.
3. Keep your anti-virus program up to date.
4. Firewalls do NOT NEED updating, so stop worrying about zone alarm.
5. Steer clear of Microsoft updates to things like MediaPlayer which might not work
on W98 and may be hard to back out of. This is part of the "if it ain't broke, don't
fix it" mentality.
The advice to upgrade to W98SE was good insofar as it gives you USB support if you
need it, but this is not essential if you don't.
Relax and enjoy W98 for as long as your hardware holds up and this forum remains
your backstop.
Oh of course I should have said make sure your data is backed up, but that is nothing
to do with W98 or anything else - just a sensible precaution unless you don't care
if you lose it all.
