|I gather that Win 98 ([mine's] not even 2nd ed) is to be dropped

Steve (as he so often does) hit the nail right on the head.
Here's a response from him that I particularly like to someone else
who was all atwitter about ZoneAlarm:

Let me put a fine point on the other end: FIREWALLS DO NOT NEED UPDATING.
As Steve says, old ones are not just fine--they are actually better
--less useless bloat added (as if there could be useful bloat)--
and bloat is all they can add--firewall principles haven't changed in over a decade.

To put a fine point on what Martin said,
there are no "signature" files for firewalls;
YOU create the rules for your firewall.

|for my purposes[,] a basic system has always been fine.
|
If your computer is serving you well, why screw with it?
If your needs change (e.g., USB thumbdrive),
you might consider DNA's recommendation to step up to SE.

|I guess [it's] time to upgrade
|
Hey! Martin beat me to the use of "hype" before I could post. 8-( ;-)
Looking at his post, he went me one-better on most of the points I was going to hit.
(One thing he didn't mention is that
Outbreak Express is the #2 vector for Windoze infections--right behind Internet Exploder.)

Keep your shields up (both your firewall activated and your common sense in place)
and stop listening to hype
from people who want to sell you software that you don't need
(and the hardware purchases which so often accompany those "upgrades").

It's time to mention that most of the "protection"
required for Windows--of all stripes--is (almost)[1] all 3rd-party stuff.
(Security in the OS itself is horrid).

...and now for something completely different:

[1] The only thing M$ offers is Microsoft Defender (nee "GIANT Software Anti-Spyware").
Immediately after buying that company,
they crippled the flagship product so that it wouldn't work on 98
(or any non-NT OS).
