It doesn't sound like you are clicking on **the program**
--that is C:\Program Files\...\WINWORD.EXE.
It sounds like you are using a Shortcut.
I doubt that making a new Shortcut would solve this, but if you want to try that:

This is NOT a M$ Word forum

but you could try deleting NORMAL.DOT.
If that doesn't work, reinstall the program.

I doubt it.  See "Shortcut" (above).

|If I hit ctrl/alt/delete, it says winword is not responding.

Sounds thoroughly borked to me.  Reinstall it.
