Thank you Ed and Lee. I am sure it is difficult to try to explain programming language to a non programer. First, I would accept your suggestion of sticking with "%1", but that has not been an option. Here are my options: Lavasoft Adware says Notepad.exe%1 is a problem and recommends deleting the entry. This is reported twice as an Hkey_classes_root: re and Hkey_classes_:se. If I accept their recommendation, Spybot teatimer detects the change and asks me to allow or deny. Systmen Mechanic 6 runs and takes an opposing view. They detect two problems: (regedit.exe"%1" )and ("%1"/s). If I take their advice, Teatimer asks me to allow or deny changing back to (Notepad.exe%1). "%1" is not an option given. I have never intentionally made any changes to the registry except perhaps by running Gape's unofficial Win 98Se sp 2.1a located on the MSFN or Exuberant software. That board is dedicated to maintaining 98SE and ME.
