Well, it didn't actually boot from the CD. It tried to. Booting would mean it found an operating system.

You could boot from a floppy that had DOS and the correct driver to read the CD. You could install from there.

Try copying the entire CD to a folder named WinXpBak or some name like that. You could install from there.

Better yet, use Win98 and open that disc with Explore and take a look at its integrity.
