Bob,
Can we take a different approach to the problem: what computer malfunction are you
experiencing?
If your PC is in fact working fine, the "error" report you are getting is not something
to be worried about. If you make a change in your Registry you could land up with
an actual problem, so perhaps you shouldn't take any action as that might make matters
worse.
If, however, your PC has a actual malfunction, if you tell us what it is that will
help us in diagnosing what is wrong in your registry.
I can tell you what's wrong with the entry that you've quoted. The entry notepad.exe%1
will cause a fault every time, because there must be a space between the file name
and the % sign. The correct entry is:
notepad.exe "%1"
You can use REGEDIT.EXE to search in your registry for incorrect data in the form
notepad.exe%1 and then manually you can correct the entries it finds, so that they
read as I've indicated above.
The registry keys relate to three-character file type extensions (eg .txt or .doc
or .mp3 etc), and the registry entries hold information as to what action must be
taken by Windows 98 when you click on a file of that type.
The answer to your question, therefore, is that the form of the command that needs
to be recorded in the registry is determined by the type of file that the system
has to process. So if you tell us which file type is faulty we'll tell you what to
do to correct that.
There are hundreds of file types. It's essential to know what type you want to fix
in order to identify what the fix must be.
