Indeed I had that happen once. So last things first, I cured it with "SYS C:".
But it took a bit more than that.
I had been installing a digital camera that an office supply store was getting rid
of at a steep discount. The version of the software bundled with it made the false
assumption that everyone left the My Documents icon on the Desktop. I didn't. The
company had 2 sets of instructions on how to put it back on the Desktop. Against
my usual instincts to figure it out for myself and do it my way, on a whim I decided
to follow the instructions. One of the sets of instructions was an OOOPS! that left
out a step. Following it, I ended up with the "OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND". Further
investigation with "DIR C:" showed that every file had been erased from the root
folder. Fortunately, there was nothing else erased.
I had backup copies of my AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS in other folders so I was back
in operation in half an hour. And it was a great stimulus to my adrenalin. And
the sweating cleaned out my pores.
In another half hour I had figured out a way for Irfanview to directly call their
TWAIN driver.
It would be interesting to have carefully traced the steps that exactly can erase
the C: files like that, but I don't want to.
For $20 it was a nice little camera and my family liked the quality of the pix I
emailed them.
