I finally found out what the tones were when I left the wireless LAN card out during a boot-up. The sounds were not there. It appears that the tones are an indication that a PCMCIA card is inserted. It is much louder that any tones I get when a piece of hardware is connected when running Windows XP. I did find a way to silence the tones. Go to the Control Panel and click on the PCMCIA icon. Now click on the Global Settings tab. Click in the "Disable PC card sound effects." Click on Apply. That should silence these tones.
