Okay, we're back to the advice to boot to the A: drive with a Win98 DOS diskette.
Then try:
DIR C:
or
DIR C: /P
to find out what files are on the C: drive. (The /P means pause at
every screenful.)
As I said, there are rare circumstances where only a few essential files are missing.
It does not harm Win98 to reestablish the hidden DOS files at their dedicated sectors.
From the A: drive, enter:
SYS C:
To start Win98 you will need:
- AUTOEXEC.BAT
- CONFIG.SYS
- MSDOS.SYS or WINBOOT.INI
The last 2 are hidden system files. You can access them with:
ATTRIB *.* -S -H -R
MSDOS.SYS was superseded by WINBOOT.INI in the last Win98 security update. The 2
files are identical. They are just ASCII text and can be modified with EDIT.
Go thru those steps now and see what you have.
It is possible also to boot to the Win98 CD instead of the floppy but I have not
done that and can't describe the details that would ensue.
Here's hoping for a

for you and your computer.
