Be sure to run a full (surface) scan. Enable logging (in scandisk) and note any files 
it attempts to repair. Try to find clean copies of these files to replace them again 
if they were un-repairable.
If the drive appears ok, I doubt the "SET path" command is freezing the machine; 
It is probably the next command in Autoexec.bat. To "remove" commands in Autoexec.bat 
and Config.sys, first copy them (as, say, Config.01) for easy restoration. Then place 
"rem " in front of the command, no quotes and the space is intentional. This makes 
the line a REMark, ignored by the OS.
