Java Virtual Machine Error

I've got a .jar file that I'm trying to open, but I get the following error: "Java Virtual Machine Launcher Could not find the main class. Program will exit." I have java downloaded and ran a spyware scan as well. I also tried opening the file at school on a windows xp, but got the same error.
