I think the missing step is that Barbara needs to press Ctrl+A to highlight all the messages in a folder and then press Del.

At least that works in Thunderbird.

Barbara, the edit commands Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+P were created as part of the Xerox PARC project in the early '80s. Both Apple and Microsoft ripped them off and thereby made them the industry standard. You can always count on them as a rule.

To delete a few messages at a time you can hold down the Shift key while dragging the cursor over them. After they're highlighted you can press Del.
